Cienega Canyon in Cibola National Forest.

When the weather turns hot and it’s time to look for a place with tall pine trees, perhaps a small stream, you don’t have to look far. It’s Cienega Canyon in Cibola National Forest, just east of the city.
It’s a day use only site, with picnic tables, and bathrooms. Although there’s no guarantee, we were there in the thick of summer and the brook was gurgling amid a thick forest. Bird-watchers love it but picnickers will also love this cool oasis. There’s a handicap accessible Nature Trail that starts from the picnic area and goes along the stream and meadow. It’s perfect for slow walkers, strollers, and small children as well. You can also follow the trail signs up or down the mountain. GPS coordinates are: 35.175724,-106.378312 There are several parking areas along the way. One has clearly marked accessible signs. The other possibility is to go to the last area which also has picnic areas and paved walks. Caution: don’t let children wander away. This is part of the wilderness area and prudence is recommended. Directions: Go east on I-40 to exit 175 (Tierjas). From the exit ramp turn left (north) and go under the highway continuing north on Rt 14 (Turquoise Trail). Follow Rt 14 north and turn left (west) onto Rt 536. Continue up Rt 536 to the Cienega Canyon Trail Head. Take the first left after entering Cibola National Forest and then left again at the fork inside the Cienega area. There will be signs along the road. Please contact the Sandia Ranger District office for current information regarding when the sites are open. Phone: 505-281-3304
